Ryde Cockaigne Housing | UHerts technology

The Cockaigne Housing is a co-housing project in the Ryde, Hatfield, built in 1966 by PRP Architects. The award-winning Grade-II listed development was designed as a pioneering social and architectural experiment in communal living and pre-fabricated housing.

The basic building typology is a one-storey patio-house with many passive solar and green design features. The second-year students through a series of drawings and digital three-dimensional modelling studied the building’s interior design, construction technology and environmental details.

The owners-residents were very welcoming to our visit. They were happy to share their experiences of the houses, and of the exceptional community feeling that this housing complex has nurtured.
